I am primarily a wood carver inspired by human anatomy and the naturally grown timber of our native hardwood trees . . . the weight, shape, strength and warmth of one echoes the other. Having rebuilt wooden boats for many years, I’m also fascinated by the construction methods used in very old wooden framed ships and buildings. All the pieces shown, except the two named below, are or were originally wood carvings.
I use clay modelling and resin casts for pieces that can’t be made directly from wood – The Rower, Birch Bark – and also to reproduce many one off carvings, although they don’t have the same feel as the wooden originals.
I am very happy to work closely on commissions. Ditsum Plum and Golden Lion were major collaborative projects, a community led piece and a restoration, and I have undertaken many smaller projects. Please contact me, without obligation, if you have a piece in mind.
